The Secret to Teaching

The other day at lunch I was discussing many of the struggles that I have been facing this school year with my colleagues. The ladies I eat with were sharing some of their struggles as well. We try not to get stuck discussing the negative but this was a particularly rough day for all of us. During our discussion one of my colleagues shared advice that she got from her mentor years ago.

“The secret to being successful at teaching is to have more good days than bad days”

When I heard my colleague say this it hit me. Hard. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I think that this might be one of the best pieces of advice that I have received and it has stuck with me since.

This little golden nugget is true for people working in every profession. The bad days are going to come. There are going to be struggles and challenges. But, the struggles do not have to hold you back. Each bad day can be viewed as a learning experience and something that you can grow from. If you have been having a hard time lately stop and ask yourself if you are having more good days than bad days. If the answer is yes, you are on the right track. Just keep going.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
